Co-curricular ActivitiesThe students’ Union of Umeschandra College, a statutory body, is organized on a voluntary basis. The object of the Union is to provide a common platform where the students belonging to different communities and denomination way mix freely and working close cooperation with one another in an atmosphere of goodwill and harmony. a) Selection: The Students’ Union is run by the students’ representative (C.R- Class Representatives) who are elected by the bonafide students for a certain period. (It may be mentioned here that at present there is no Students’ Union in our College as the Election to the Students’ Union of educational institutions has been banned by Higher Education Department (Government of West Bengal since 2016-17). b) Constitution: Unlike many a college in West Bengal, our college has a Students’ Union Constitution according to which the election to the Students’ Union is held. All regular students are members of the Students’ Union. They are entitled to cast vote in the process of selection of the students’ representatives. Each section can send two representatives to the Students’ Union. A student becomes eligible to contest Students’ Union election provided he/she attends not less than 55% of classes held in his/her class for which he/she want to represent. Further he/she must have to clear six months’ tuition fees before the election. c) Functions/Activities: The Union through the elected class representatives cooperates with the College Authorities in maintaining discipline in the college and understanding social and youth welfare projects sponsored by parent University. The Students’ Union is to organize study circles, debates, social gathering and to assists the College authorities in making all college functions successful. The Students’ Union is supposed to -
Representation of the Students in various academic/administrative bodiesThe Students’ Union is under the ultimate and absolute control of the Principal. There are several committees to help the Principal for smooth running of the college. Students’ Union also plays a vital role in college academic/administration. Students have representatives in the following academic and administrative bodies:
(a) Governing Body: The General Secretary of the Students’ Union is an ex-officio member of the Governing Body which is the apex policy making body of the College. The other members of the Governing Body attribute much importance to the suggestions and views of the student member. (b) Admission Committee: As students are the main stakeholders of the college, the Students’ Union plays a vital role in admission process. (c) IQAC: The General Secretary of the Students’ Union also functions as a member of IQAC. Beside the Students’ Union also plays a vital role in any kind of decision making/actions taken in Anti-ragging and Grievance Redressal Committees. |
